The end of PLEG

23:59:59 Tuesday 31st December 2019

Friends, I am writing to inform you that PLEG will cease to exist at midnight on New Year’s Eve 2019. Formed in 2003, PLEG has over 1,000 members and the website gets over 1,000 hits a day. We created PLEG to provide opportunities for our members to ride behind rare locos and to give publicity to diesel galas at preserved railways. However things have moved on since 2003; railways now tend to use their full fleet of locos at diesel galas, including shunters, which was not the norm back in 2003 and the Branch Line Society (BLS) has changed its committee and they now actively seek to organise events that are attractive to haulage as well as track enthusiasts. For events the BLS holds the relevant insurances, it has its own passenger carrying vehicle and it has financial reserves. PLEG, charging no membership fee, has none of these things. Given the excellent BLS committee and the fantastic relationship we have with them, we believe that events which are attractive to haulage enthusiasts will continue after PLEG. Regarding the PLEG website and the advertising of diesel galas; the BLS have kindly agreed to allocate a page of the BLS website to diesel galas so the page that gets the vast majority of hits at PLEG will continue, just in a different location. We did consider discontinuing the gala page because a lot of gala organisers, who used to send their Gen to PLEG, just tend to post it directly on social media nowadays anyway. However we have decided to continue with the diesel gala page for now. Please note that you will not need to join the BLS to view the diesel gala page, they will kindly make that free to view for all, but we would certainly encourage you to join because if you only do one of their events you effectively get your money back and that is in addition to all the other great benefits being a member brings. We are hopeful that our soon to be ex-members will still be able to get all they need from the BLS in 2019 and beyond and the changes will allow PLEG to retire our website and its associated costs. We are really proud of what PLEG achieved, it created numerous opportunities for rare haulages whilst generating thousands of pounds, all of which was donated to the railways, loco owners and good causes. But all good things come to end and its time to move on. Thank you to all our members for your kind and generous support over the years. I will write to you again regarding the next steps in the coming weeks. Ian Loveday PLEG Group Leader
